Abstract

This dissertation explores the influence artificial intelligence (AI) has on album cover design. With the rapid advancement of AI technologies, AI-generated imagery is increasingly used across creative industries, including graphic design. Focusing on contemporary album covers, this dissertation analyses both AI and human-designed covers, comparing their visual characteristics and design approaches. It also examines audience perception and whether responses are positive or negative towards both the album artwork and musician. This dissertation uses album covers to address a currently under researched area of AI-generated graphic design. Using a combination of case studies and a questionnaire conducted with music listeners, the findings cover the characteristics of AI-generated covers as well as how they communicate mood, genre and artist identity.
